Training

Training and capacity building is one of the principal activities of IPH. There is increasing evidence highlighting  crucial  human  resource  gaps  in  health services.  There is a mismatch in knowledge, skills and experience between academics and the health services and bridging this discrepancy is our crucial aim. IPH looks at training as an activity which goes beyond the class room sessions building human capacities across all levels.
Elearning: As of  January 2013, Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru will be launching an elearning initiative titled ePHM (elearning course for Public Health Managers). The ePHM course is the first of its kind in India. The course offers 12 modules on public health management for health managers. The primary aim is to equip the health managers with the knowledge and skills for managing health programmes at various levels in the health system.
MPH By July 2013 IPH, Bengaluru will have its very own Masters in Public Health course. The institute’s primary goal to launch a public health course is to develop public health capacities within the health systems. The course will train a heterogeneous team of government health care providers, middle level and senior professionals from developmental and social science sector, from research institutes and non-governmental organisations.

PHD IPH runs a sandwich PhD programme in public health with Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp. The programme is a part of a long term partnership with ITM and is funded under the Belgian Government’s DGDC grant. PhD candidates chosen under the programme are expected to spend about 8 months in their chosen field, while the remaining four months in the year is spent at ITM, Antwerp. The next call for PhD will be in 2014. Applications will be invited in the middle of 2013 on the website.

After the launch of the National Rural Health Mission, young management and other non-medical professionals were posted as programme managers at taluka/block, district and state levels. There are about 584 District Program Managers (DPMs) and 3095 Block Program Managers (BPMs) in India. They play an important role in monitoring the functioning of government health facilities. Lack of technical knowledge in health, insufficient and unclear prescribed supervisory checklists for field visits, limits them to perform effectively and efficiently in their current roles. The ePHM course is mainly designed to cater to the learning needs of such professionals, consequently the priority for ePHM will be the training of BPMs above all else.

Please note: The ePHM 2013 application is closed. Express your interest for the next batch using the link below

District Health Management

Swasthya Karnataka logo and the partners (Institute of public health,IPH)A study conducted by IPH in 2007 revealed that an important reason for poor health outcomes in India was the lack of management skills at the district level. Based on this study, IPH decided to train district level officers on public health management. To strengthen the technical inputs, IPH formed a consortium of five organisations, called Swasthya Karnataka (SK).

SK partnered with the Karnataka Health Systems Development and Reforms Project (KHSDRP) to build the capacity of the Tumkur District Health Officers.

Curriculum was developed keeping adult learning principles in mind using experiential learning techniques. Content focused on building knowledge and skills through practical application of the content to issues in the participant’s daily work routine.

Community health insurance contributes to universal health coverage in India

Community health insurance contributes to universal health coverage in India

India’s economy has tripled in size in the last three decades, yet government spending on health care remains remarkably meagre: just US$ 5 per person per year. Due to these low levels of government spending, patients have to make out-of-pocket (OOP) payments when they seek care. While many are able to cope with this, the poor and the vulnerable usually have to choose between either forgoing necessary health care or indebtedness and impoverishment when seeking care. Some Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have initiated community...
